Summer Holiday Squeeze

29th July 2019

As a former teacher, I know that one of the things that Pupil Premium payments are based on is how many children get free school meals. The government gives this payment because it is recognised that poverty affects educational attainment. The All Party Parliamentary Group on Universal Credit has released a new report recommending that all families receiving Universal Credit (UC) get free school meals.

At the same time, many parents on low incomes already struggle to feed their families at the best of times. As this article in The Guardian highlights, the summer holidays are even more difficult as parents don’t have the safety net of free school meals. We expect to see an increase in demand and are already low on some items. Please help by donating tins of meat, fruit & vegetables, and cartons of milk & fruit juice.
